Building out our 6th Gen 4Runner
We've had our 6th Gen 4Runner for just under a month and it has undergone quite the transformation over the last few weeks. Since we picked it up in Las Vegas we have turned this 4Runner from a bone stock grocery getter to a full blown off-roader just in time for Overland Expo SoCal.
From Stock to Built
We picked up our 2025 4Runner in Las Vegas just under a month ago. The 4Runner we picked up was a TRD Off-Road Premium and at the time we purchased it, it was the only TRD Off-Road Premium in the state of Nevada. The new 4Runner was a huge improvement over the 5th Gen stock. The 8 speed paired with the new 4 cylinder engine offered more power and torque than the previous 4Runner and didn't gear hunt like the previous 4Runner did as well.
After driving it back from Las Vegas we wasted no time in getting this 4Runner built out in time for Overland Expo SoCal in a little over a month.
Wrapping our 4Runner
The first thing we did to our 6th Gen 4Runner is wrap it to match the wrap we did on the Tacoma Lifestyle flagship build and the previous 4Runner Lifestyle 5th Gen build. Wrapping our 4Runner only took a few days and turned out amazing. As far as we have seen this was the first 6th Gen 4Runner to be fully wrapped and we love the way it looks!
Wheels & Tires
The best thing about these new Toyota trucks is they clear larger tires much easier than their predecessors. We knew we wanted to do bigger tires on the all new 6th Gen 4Runner so we went with a 35x12.5 Yokohama M/T tire for our flagship build. We paired that with 17" Nomad wheels which gave this 4Runner a wide and aggressive look and improved its ground clearance.
Armor & Roof Racks
One of the final modifications we did to our 6th Gen 4Runner build before the SoCal Overland Expo is a roof rack and a ton of armor. Our roof rack in a Prinsu Pro and is one of the first roof racks available for the 6th Gen 4Runner. It helps us mount things like a rooftop tent, MaxTrax, or more storage options like a Roam Rugged Case to the roof of our 4Runner without the worry of damaging it in any way.
We then added CBI Overland Rock Sliders, and Skid Plates so we could protect the bottom half of the vehicle while doing more technical trails. CBI has since released a low profile bumper and a hatch ladder that we are also planning to install.
Final Thoughts
The new 6th Gen 4Runner has performed great both stock and as we have built it up into a more capable off-roader. The engine and transmission which many people have criticized have been one of this vehicles greatest strengths as we have owned it. The 6th Gen 4Runner never lacks power or torque throughout its power curve and has been able to maintain that power even with the added weight of skid plates and 35" tires, although it has decreased slightly.
We have absolutely loved our time with the 6th Gen 4Runner and the opportunity to build it out so quickly. We look forward to sharing our experience with you all as we put this platform to the test on the trails of Utah.
