Fitting 35s on the 6th Gen 4Runner

The all new 6th Gen 4Runner has been hitting the dealerships for a few months now and we've already seen people start to build out this platform for overloading and off-roading. One of the first things people do when buying a new 4Runner is throwing a larger set of tires on to improve ground clearance and increase off-road capability. The 6th Gen 4Runner has made it easier than ever to run a larger tire size with minimal modifications. Multiple people have already jumped up to a 35" tire with little issues which is something that was never possible with the previous 5th Gen 4Runner.

We decided to do 35s on our own 6th Gen 4Runner build and want to share with you guys how we got this tires to fit on our 4Runner, what things you'll need to think of when running 35s on the 6th Gen, and how we like them so far after we drove the 4Runner to California and back on 35s.

Wheel Offset

The 6th Gen 4Runner sits on Toyotas new TNG-F platform which is the same platform for the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. All of these vehicles now sit wider than their previous models and the OEM wheels now come with a positive offset instead of the 0 offset like before.

Because these new trucks sit wider than before, a negative offset wheel can poke a lot more than it used to. We went with a -10 offset wheel which pushed the tire outside of the fenders. If we were to change anything on our 4Runner we would probably change to a 0 offset wheel which will still poke slightly out of the fenders but allow us to clear tires easier than the -10 offset wheel did.

Trimming

Because of the aggressive offset on the wheel, we had to do slightly more trimming then you would have to on a 0 offset or positive offset wheel. We had to slightly trim the front bumper and behind the wheel well as well as remove the crash plate behind the tire to access more room for our larger tires. We did end up doing a viper cut in anticipation of eventually running an even larger tire size but it won't be necessary for anyone wanting to run 35s with a 2" lift.

Final Thoughts

The new 6th Gen 4Runner has been one of favorite rigs at the shop and part of that is how easy this new 4Runner makes it to fit larger tires with little modification. If you are looking to run a larger tire size on your 6th Gen 4Runner we do recommend running a 2" lift to help with clearing the tires which you can find on our website!
